Guillermina Altomonte

I am an ethnographer who works on health care, culture, and organizations. Currently a postdoctoral fellow at NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service, I’m writing a book that looks at how the ideal of independence defines the culture and economy of aging in the United States. You can read articles from this project in American Sociological Review and in Theory and Society. In other research I explore how family caregivers experience time, and the cultural legitimation of assisted living in Chile. I’m also an active member of the Carework Network, an international organization of academics, policymakers, and advocates of care.
